    Version 2.6.6

Pssssst: We’re pushing out a small bugfix release today (2.6.6) to address three issues that slipped by us in 2.6.5:

    • Editing a post doesn’t preserve the correct publishing date.
    • App freezes if you change status to Draft on iPad.
    • Pages crash when publishing from the Media tab.

This release was submitted to the App Store today, and should be available early next week.

We’re also considering push notifications for Likes as well. What do you guys think? What else would you want to have notifications for?

    • Darnell Clayton 7:32 pm on January 27, 2011 Permalink | Reply

What about for links/pingbacks/trackbacks? Or would WP for iOS send those anyways? (as it would be the same for comments).

And would we have to install a plugin for this to work?

      • Chris Boyd 7:57 pm on January 27, 2011 Permalink | Reply

Initially I think this is going to be a WordPress.com feature Darnell. But yes, notifications for comments should cover pingbacks/trackbacks. I’ll double check on links.

I’d only want push for new comments. I don’t even like the email notifications about likes… if my phone buzzed every time some random person liked a post it would drive me batty, since there’s very little chance I would go to visit their site and check them out (the prompt with like notifications) on my phone browser, whereas I would definitely read and/or moderate a new comment when notified.

I could see using push to notify if a scheduled post went live. That would be handy.

      • Chris Boyd 10:34 pm on January 28, 2011 Permalink | Reply

Agreed, the likes feature could get really old really fast for blogs with lots of likes. But I know personally I’d like to receive notifications for my posts, and I think people with blogs that get less traffic might feel the same way.

Maybe we turn it off by default, or turn it off for blogs that average more than X number of likes.

I love the scheduled post goes live idea. Adding it to the list!

    Beta Testing Version 2.6.2

We’re putting the finishing touches on Version 2.6.2 and already have our Beta Team testing it out. Over the weekend, we’ll be doing a lot of heavy duty testing to ensure that this version is stable and resolves the major issues that our users have brought up.

If you have XCode and would like to help by testing in the iPhone Simulator, you can check out a copy using Subversion here: http://ios.svn.wordpress.org/.

Let us know what you think and if you run into any issues you think should be resolved in this latest version.

I have downloaded the project, But it does not compile. It seems to be missing PLCrashReporter and AssetsLibrary. I have found PLCrashReporter but not AssetsLibrary. I do not know where to install CrashReporter or where to get AssetsLibrary. I am new to iPhone development and don’t know how things are done yet.

    • Chris Boyd 1:08 am on October 27, 2010 Permalink | Reply

Hey there John, you’ll need to go here to get PLCrashReporter:
      http://code.google.com/p/plcrashreporter/downloads/list

Once you’ve copied the framework somewhere local, you’ll need to update the path to the Framework inside your project.

For AssetsLibrary, you just need to go to Frameworks and right click, then Add > Existing Frameworks, and choose AssetsLibrary from the list.

      • John Grabner 2:39 am on October 27, 2010 Permalink | Reply

I have the dmg file. But I don’t know what to copy where. As I said I am new to Mac development. I don’t have the AssetsLibrary in my framework list. I have set my base SDK to iPhone OS 3.2.

John, if AssetsLibrary isn’t available, it sounds like you’re not running the iOS 4.0 SDK. You’ll need that to run the app, or you’ll want to remove all references to AssetsLibrary in the app.

When uploading small images, the app doesn’t upload original image, nor scale 1:1, instead it upscale. None of the four options actually make a good image for blogging iPhone screenshots.

I’ll register in trac later, so by sunday you’ll have a propper ticket from me.

      Thx for free software!

Videos on iPhone 4 are going to be huge. We can display them resized inside the post or just let the user decide what to do later. I know of no themes that will support content dimensions like 1280 x 720.

We’ve decided to use the HTML 5 <video> tag when embedding the video inside a post. Now we just need to decide what width and height we should default to once the video content has been added to the post.

    • Chris 6:43 pm on October 7, 2010 Permalink | Reply

I’d say most blogs with a sidebar, the main content area isn’t wider than 500 px, so the default should be scaled with that in mind…?

    • Jorge Bernal 11:15 pm on October 19, 2010 Permalink | Reply

I’d go for 640, since it’s the content width of the default new theme. Honoring the theme’s content_width would be great, but I’m not sure if it’s possible at this point.

Video Testers: We’re seeing successful large video uploads with these values in .htaccess:

    php_value memory_limit 64M
    php_value upload_max_filesize 50M

All of these have been on various VPSs though. I’d like to see if we can get some successful uploads on a shared host. Anyone have some time to try different configs on their WordPress self-hosted?

    • Darnell Clayton 8:11 pm on October 1, 2010 Permalink | Reply

Most shared hosts restrict how much resources a site can use before they penalize it. Unless you are in a shared plan that has few other blogs (few=30 at max) then this will not work to my knowledge.

    Video Beta Testers

Hey there – Do you have an iPhone 4 and a WordPress 3.0 self-hosted site? Feel like volunteering some time next week to help us beta test the new video feature in the upcoming 2.6 version of the app?

We need 5 people who fit all of the above to help us do some final testing of the video feature that will debut in WordPress for iOS very soon. You’ll need to be able to test one build per day, starting Monday, and ending either Wednesday or Thursday.

We’d like you to focus solely on recording and uploading video, and tell us what you think.

If you think you’re up for it, leave a comment below. First five to reply will join the Beta Team as Video Testers.

We’re going to start pushing for much more frequent updates, so we can address bugs and push out new features more quickly. 2.6 was kindof a big hurdle to get over due to the complete overhaul of the way Local Drafts work, so it took a good bit of time.

        • Darnell Clayton 2:19 am on September 22, 2010 Permalink | Reply

Sweet! I’ll have take a look at the new 2.6.1 beta package (after scrubbing the previous ad hoc from iTunes).

I’m in the process of switching hosts (so I haven’t tried altering the .htcacess), but I might test this out on my P2 blog (a theme that I already love!).

Looking forward to the future of WordPress iOS–mainly because it means I can chill with my Android/Blackberry friends without them showing off their WP apps (especially my Evo friend! Grrrrrrrr!). :-)

            Thanks. So are we! :D

Let me know if you need any help with the .htaccess stuff. I think we’ll have quite a bit of WPorg users who will need to make this change.

            • Darnell Clayton 6:19 pm on September 22, 2010 Permalink | Reply

After changing my .htcaccess the app still crashed. However this comes to no surprise (as my current host has been acting funky since they upgraded the server–hence the reason for the move).

I’ll try to beta test it on a fresh server elsewhere.

              • Chris Boyd 6:47 pm on September 22, 2010 Permalink

Thanks for testing. We’ll definitely want to make sure our WPorg users can use the new Video feature as much as possible so I’d like to figure out what’s going on with your current server if possible. Do you see anything in the logs that might give us a clue?

              • Darnell Clayton 6:56 pm on September 22, 2010 Permalink

Do you know where I can search the logs to find out? And yeah, it failed on all 3 servers that I tested. Basically the video compresses and that app crashes after attempting to upload.

I tried it on a fresh install too (same thing). Is there a certain plugin that we need?

              • Chris Boyd 7:00 pm on September 22, 2010 Permalink

No plugins should be necessary. On my 3.0 site I’ve got these in my .htaccess:

                php_value memory_limit 64M
                php_value upload_max_filesize 50M

Maybe try adding that 2nd line and see if it helps? Also, what version of WP and how long was the video?

              • Darnell Clayton 7:26 pm on September 22, 2010 Permalink

I’m updated to 3.0.1, and the app did the same thing after I added a second line.

On a weird note, the .htcaccess file was saying that I should try modifying the php.ini file instead (which doesn’t make sense…or does it?).

              • Chris Boyd 7:27 pm on September 22, 2010 Permalink

Ooh let’s try that! Do you have access to it? If so, do it this way:

                memory_limit = 64M
                upload_max_filesize = 50M

              • Darnell Clayton 7:31 pm on September 22, 2010 Permalink

I do have access to it (I had to search for it across all my sites). What do I edit?

              • Darnell Clayton 7:44 pm on September 22, 2010 Permalink

Same result. Ironically the memory limit was already set at 64M but the upload max filesize was 10M).

Either way my server prefers editing from the php.ini (as it crashes everytime I use .htcaccess).

              • Darnell Clayton 7:56 pm on September 22, 2010 Permalink

LOL! Don’t sweat over this too much! :-) I’ll figure something out later. I’m just glad I can upload multiple images where I want them (instead of them all appearing at the bottom).

On a side note, this might be the reason why BlogPress opted for YouTube instead of natively uploading videos.

Bug reports – Anyone on the Beta Team having trouble submitting tickets in Trac? If so, you can just leave a report here as a comment.

    • Darnell Clayton 11:38 pm on September 11, 2010 Permalink | Reply

Heh! Is our trac login tied to our forum login? If not I don’t remember receiving an ID!

Anyways, I did find a lot of bugs ranging from crashes whenever you upload a video to a WP.org site as well as the inability to scroll down to view more content after you write (scroll bar error perhaps?).

Also whenever I try to change the post from local draft to publish it crashes too. Anything else you need info on? :-)

      • Chris Boyd 1:46 am on September 12, 2010 Permalink | Reply

Yep – Trac login is tied to your forum login. I just tried to reproduce the inability to scroll issue and couldn’t do it. Were you on Posts or Pages?

Also, try adding this line to your root .htaccess file:

        php_value memory_limit 64M
    • Chris Boyd 1:35 am on September 12, 2010 Permalink | Reply

Darnell – How long was the video you uploaded? There’s some changes you may need to make to your .htaccess file on your WPorg site to get it to work.

Definitely need to talk more about the crashes when it changes from Local Draft to Publish. Could you tell me any more?

    • sutherlandboswell 2:56 am on September 12, 2010 Permalink | Reply

Can’t log into the forum or Trac…

Anyways, the issue I’ve already noticed is image ratios on the iPad. You can see the obviously stretched image at http://suthdevtest.wordpress.com/

Another thing is that after tapping on an image in the media tab to view it full screen, there’s no back button… it took me a moment to figure out the delete button did the equivalent.

When adding an image to a page, there’s no Save button until I modify the text, which people might think means it’s already saved or just not know how to save. I don’t have this problem when adding an image to a regular post.

And a couple other little things…

Lots of crashes after dealing with media.

It seems like you’re aware of this, but preview isn’t working for me. Using a WordPress.com blog with the TwentyTen theme. No message, just a blank page when I choose preview.

      Keep up the good work!

One thing I have noticed. I just loaded up my blog, I know there is an article waiting to be published, but I don’t see it. The list of articles spans ALL articles now with no press to load more button, and no pending articles.

    • nazaroth 12:55 pm on September 12, 2010 Permalink | Reply

Ok please ignore my last post :/

I do have another bug though, when writing an article, when the text gets to the bottom of the window, it will keep going but I am no longer able to see what I am writing and cannot scroll down to see.

    • nazaroth 1:18 pm on September 12, 2010 Permalink | Reply

Also after writing some text in a new article, if I then try to add some media, the “+” button is covered by the wordpress logo that shows auto saves, so I am unable to press the “+” button.

    • Darnell Clayton 1:51 am on September 13, 2010 Permalink | Reply

Odd. I thought I’d subscribed to this thread?! I’ll check my spam box (sorry for the belated response).

I’ll see about editing my .htcacess Chris, although I’ll be switching hosts in s month as my current one is slowing down.

As far as posting goes, video uploads (regardless of size crash, and I am unable to scroll down within the app.

I’ll see if I can reproduce these upon a WP.com site.
