Plan for version 3.2 over the next week as discussed in the weekly dev chat:

    1. Complete Enhancement tickets listed in Trac by Friday
    2. Clean up Trac and move unnecessary tickets to Future Release
    3. Announce an early Beta or Alpha (however we want to word it) first thing next week (Monday)

Ive been looking to get involved, but it is unclear to me where to start. Can you offer any advice?

There needs to be a better getting started guide.

Basically this is how development works for the WP for iOS app:

        1. A decision is made in the weekly dev chat (Wednesdays 15:00 UTC in #wordpress-mobile on Freenode) to work on an app update. We decide – as a community – what enhancements make the most sense to do next and what bugs/UX inconsistencies should be a priority to resolve. This process can span over multiple meetings.
        2. Tickets are gathered/created in a new milestone on the WP for iOS Trac and the major tasks are assigned to contributors, the rest are usually up for grabs. The dev cycle has a rough timeline, scope has been decided, and tasks divided, and so it starts.
        3. Each week we discuss the progress of open dev cycles in the weekly dev chat. Discussion also happens spontaneously in IRC throughout the weeks.
        4. Once enhancements are in and bugs are fixed, testing starts. We usually set aside 1/3 of each dev cycle for testing – much less than say Core WP does. This is because the user base is relatively small and there are not too many people building and testing the app outside of the core app dev team.
        5. If testing goes well, the app is submitted to the App Store for evaluation, and we draft announcements to have ready. Usually by this time we’re already discussing the next major release and any bug fix updates that may be needed for the just submitted release.

To create your first patch you should join the weekly meeting and/or ping is in #wordpress-mobile another time to figure out where a good place would be to start based on your obj-c knowledge coming in and of course where your strengths lie in general. After it’s been discussed you get assigned or assign yourself to tickets as needed in Trac and start cranking. Create a patch with the diff and upload that to the ticket and ask someone to review it. If it goes through, you’ll be on the contributors list in the next announcement!

Looking forward to talking more about all this. Is there anything that’s unclear still? Any and all feedback that would’ve helped you get started would probably help others so feedback is much appreciated.

Hi Judy, have you found your way around the app yet?

Updated the milestone due date for version 3.2, aiming for roughly 2 weeks out given that we cut corners and have a beta out sometime next week.

Updated the Twitter avatar for @WordPressiOS to match the new app icon introduced in version 3.1, this is what it looks like in context:

Version 3.1.2 is now live in the App Store. This release takes care of Jetpack/Stats log in issues, makes the Jetpack set up easier, and fixes bugs and crashes.

If you’re still having trouble with Jetpack and the Stats screen, please let us know asap so we can help you work any last kinks out. The forums are a good place to start: ios.forums.wordpress.org

Saw lots of reports that stats still wasn’t fixed. 😦 I started poking around and found an issue with percent encoding of special characters in the username and password for the stats auth. As of right now, the auth will fail if there is a special character in either the username/email and password that isn’t escaped properly.

Turns out that ‘stringByAddingPercentEscapesUsingEncoding’ doesn’t actually do what it claims! It skips a lot of characters that need to be escaped. I found a solution though, and @daniloercoli created a 3.1.X branch and I added the fix there: http://ios.trac.wordpress.org/changeset/3405

I think this will fix the issue for most users, and warrants a 3.1.3 release ASAP.

I cleaned up the 3.2 roadmap a bit but there’s still ~60 tickets in there as they all looked like worthwhile issues that should be looked at if we have time. For now, focus on the tickets that have the enhancement type, and if there’s time focus on all of the others.

Do you think the panel interface would still work on a smaller, 7.85″ display? 🙂

I think the panels in general would still work. It might make sense to let individual detail panels slide all the way to the left side’s offset to get the best usage of space, especially in portrait orientation. Maybe the wide panels would need some attention too.

We might have to revert to the iPhone panels depending on how the screen space feels. I’d hate for the iPad panels to feel extremely cluttered.

Biggest issue right now seems to be related to the webviews not loading correctly/crashing and most notably the Stats screen being broken for many. Let’s prioritize this in the bug fix release.

WordPress for iOS 3.1 is LIVE!

Hey everyone!  We’re stoked to announce that WordPress for iOS 3.1 is now available for download in the app store!  Get it while its hot!

While the app was in review we’ve been working on a minor update to add in a few things that we just didn’t have time for in to the big 3.1 release. Now that the app is out some bugs have arisen that we’ll need to take care of as well. We’re planning on submitting the update soon but we’d love to include as many patches as possible, so go get the app and take it for a test drive. If you see something that you think needs fixing tell us about it here or open a ticket for it. Even better, submit a patch of your own!

Hey Josh, as you may have noticed we’ve been busy with launching version 3.1 of the app. We’ll be able to pick up development again soon.

Here’s the dev chat summary for this week. We discussed more than WPiOS this week but since we don’t have a mobile p2 yet I will just put all of the notes here:

    WordPress for iOS

    • We celebrated the submission of 3.1 to the app store!
    • We chatted about what needs to be done for 3.1.1, and how it may impact the 3.2 timeline. In order to squash the bugs in the 3.1.1 roadmap we will probably need to push back the 3.2 submission until the 2nd or 3rd week of September.
    • We figured a 3.1.2 release will also be important to prepare once we start getting feedback from users on 3.1 when it is out in the wild. Less people will have to work on this release though, so we can put some people on 3.2 dev while others hammer out the 3.1.2 fixes.
    • We agreed on the feature list for 3.2, with a wild card being contentEditable. @irbrad is going to see if it is feasible to include in 3.2 and will report his findings at next week’s meeting.

    Other Stuff

    • We thought it would be a good idea to add featured image and gallery support to all of the major apps at relatively the same time, perhaps around the same time as the 3.2 launch.
    • We discussed the upcoming BB 10 release, and @daniloercoli mentioned he has a proof of concept of a WP app that uses WebWorks (HTML5).
    • The WP7 app needs some lovin’. A few of us volunteered to do a dev iteration on the app once we get out of the WPiOS madness. Discussed adding local draft support and making sure it runs well on Windows Phone 8.
